is he drinking enough milk?
27/11/2008

Hello my 12 week old has changed his milk intake, due to his new sleep patterns, he sleeps more now, and drinks at least 3 - 4 bottles a day, however not always finishing them, should I be concerned. he also has a cough, and I think he is starting to teeth, as he always puts his fist in his mouth, and soaks his babygrows, is anyone else having this problem, or can anyone shed some light, as am concerned.

Hi, I have 14 week old. you say he's taking '3 or 4 bottles' but you dont say how much is in the bottles?? If your using ready made milk - then look on the side of the tin/box and it should give you an approx amount they should be taking for their weight/age. I use SMA and on the tin it tells u this info. I'll tell u what my little one has in 24 hours - but all babues are different, however, they should be drinking a similar amount, also illness can make them drink less so that may be the reason your little is taking less at the mo. Anyway, she has 4oz bout 7pm then she goes to bed - she wakes for next feed at 4.30am and has 5oz. She will then sleep till 8am then have 4oz, at 11am another 4oz, 1pm another 4oz, 4pm another 5oz, then again at 7pm it starts again - sometimes in between those feeds she may fit in another 4oz but not everyday. Re: teethin - my understanding is that they have the symptoms approx a week before they cut the tooth - my 14 week old had been putting hand in mouth for approx 3 weeks - not if you look at baby development charts - this is something they do at this age due to the fact they have discovered their own hands - this alone does not mean they are teething, there is usually other symptoms along with this. yes they do dribble with teething but they also have a lot of saliva when they are constantly shuving their hands in their mouths. Looking on internet re teething symptoms and it will tell you what to look out for. I know teething can start from 3 months but generally from 6 months but again all babies different. Hope that helps Vicky xx

Hi this is a message for VICKY - Thanks for your reply, before he got a cold he was on 5 feeds a day and on about 6 oz, however this week it all changed with his cold or suspected teething? having less feeds and when he does have feeds they are less oz's. I thought he may of gone of his milk, so since my first post I when and brough him another formula, brought SMA he was on Aptamil fiirst so with SMA he had his 2 feeds of 5 oz last night, and 1 this morning at 6.30am. Am going to try this formula through the weekend maybe it's the milk his gone off or could be his cold or the suspected teething? I know all babies are different, any reply back from you will help again. Thanks Vicky. Anastasia

my little one is 12 weeks and is now taking 5 7oz feeds a day, he weighs just over a stone ! ive found that he occasionally goes off his food for a week sometimes or sleeps more etc, i think it must be a bug or a growth spurt but its worrying at the time! i think as long as your little one is following his centile line on the chart that all is fine. and remember your a great mum so trust your instincts as you know your little one the best. take care

Hello Gemma, thanks for your reply, I have since yesterday's post changed my baby's milk from Aptamil to SMA Gold, he seems to be drinking it, maybe your right they do go off their milk, and yes I do worry!!!!!! I just want him to drink his milk and all bottles, maybe am keen for him to grow, it's scary that his a baby, I never know what he wants when he cries so much. I hope it's just a phase or the milk that he didn't like and now I changed it see what happens. All the best with your little one.

Hi Gemma, Yeah my baby is now on SMA Gold and he seems okay with it, and he is still on 4 feeds a day as he sleeps more through the night, but I have been told by other mums that if he seems happy not to worry and if he wants a feed he will let me know. I have also noticed a change in his poo with this milk it's more greeney and gooey type, than yellow and runnier when he was on Aptamil, my friend who is also a mum to a 9 mth old said his poo looks normal and maybe the Aptamil upset his tummy and his poo was runnier. So lets see how we go with SMA and the 4 feeds, however I will mention it to my HV when I see her on Thursday when I weigh him, so my advice to you is don't worry if your baby is on 4 feeds a day and having more sleep, I guess they will let us know when they want more. It's just that it makes me upset sometimes when the tin states that he should have 5 feeds a day, and when I hear other babies on that amount I think hey my baby is not going to grow because his having less feeds, but I've been told don't to worry from several people. let me know how yo get on!!!! nice chatting to you. Anastasia
