Late Walker.... Need Advice!
21/11/2008

Hi, my daughter is 22 months and she aint walking yet. She started crawling at 20 months onwards and just recently started pulling herself up by holding things. She gets around by crawling fast and walking around by holding on. I have took advice from my health visitor and my doctor they say that she will get there eventually she is just a bit slow and to flexible. I want to speak to someone that has experienced what I am going through. Is there anyone that can answer my questions?!

hiya my daughter was an early walker at 10 months but she didnt crawl very well. anyway my mum did something with her that i then took on which seemed to encourage walking that is hold her steay wit her back to the sofa or something facing you the put your arms out and encourage her over she may take a step or two towards you and as she gains confidence then move back bit by bit, let me know how that goes for you, it worked for a friend of mines little boy, good luck!

Thank You for repying back, I'v tried that.. but she seems to stop after 1 go. She has no confidence in her, but I will keep on trying. I'll let you know how she gets on. I'm a 22 year old mum so am still learning.

hiya my daughter was an early walker 2, 11 mnths, have u been using a baby walker at all, as this can slow ther process down. i never used one, but friends of mine have and ther children have struggled with walkin, as theyr too used to the support from the baby walker, and can find no strength in ther legs to hold ther body up. if u do use a walker then the best thing to do is stop, but if not, just give loads of encouragement, if u can get sum1 to stand at one side of the room holding ur child up, and u stand a little away, mayb holding a chocolate button or something, and hold it out so ur child can see it. gud luck luv stacey rhiannon(2) and 39 wk bumpy xx

Hi, I know your concerned re: your childs walking but I wouldnt worry too much, like your Health Visitor etc said your child will get their in the end. The problem is that there is pressure on babies/toddlers to achieve certain things at a certain age (we look at developmental charts thinking right! our kids must do this at this age! along with competition between mums! we've all become obsessed!! and our poor kids suffer for it! as we place expectations on them, and if they dont live up to them they feel like they've failed!! I'm sure your doing everything you can to encourage your child to walk, and in a non pressured gentle supportive way. Just praise your child for what they have achieved so far, and the rest will come!!! in your childs own time, when THEY are ready. As mums we should be placing more emphasis on building their confidence, spending quality time, developing their thinking skills, teaching them to value themselves and others!! cause thats where our input is needed!! and less time worrying so much about those milestones that will come when your child is ready. Hope this helps, Take care, Vicky x

Hi there, my youngest daughter didn't walk until 17 1/2 months. She crawled late too (11 months). She didn't even pull herself up! I am sure that she was able to get around without walking so really couldn't be bothered!! I know exactly how you feel and everyone seems in such a rush for little ones to reach the next milestone but they do it when they are ready! You know that your little one can walk as they are walking whilst holding on. They will do it in their own time. Karen mum of 3 girls 11, 7 and 23 months.

Hi there. sorry this isn't first-hand experience but hope it helps. My friends boy didn't walk until he was 23 months old - she knew he could, as she would hold his hand and he would walk, but when she let go he would just sit down and refuse to move.In the end she just had to leave him there and walk away, He would sob his little heart out for her to come and take his hand, but she was so strong and stayed a couple of arms widths away gently encouraging him. I think it took a couple of days but in the end he took those 2 steps towards her and she was over the moon. Gradually she increased the distance and by his birthday he was walking around on his own all the time! Try and stay strong, don't get impatient with her or show her you're upset/annoyed etc, She will do it in her own time. Good luck xx Jenny and James 18 months

hi. both my sons were classed as late walkers. andy being about 18 months, and my son matthew only began walking at nearly 21 months. hes nearly 2 now, and you cant keep him still!!!. was your little one an early talker?? cos both boys began talking at 6 or 7 months. they say that babies concentrate on one thing at a time. i wouldnt let it worry you, everyones baby is different. and you will get there.
