30/11/2008

Has anyone been away with a six week old? I have already booked a holiday for next year and have just found out i am pregnant and when we are going the baby will actually been 7 weeks old ( if the dates match right). Is it safe to take them abroad?

Hi, it very much depends on where your going abroad. In some counties you can't drink the water so if your making bottles you need to think about that, it can be done but its a h**l of a lot of work or even if your breastfeeding and you have food poisoning (as you often do when abroad) it will effect the milk, and this will be a nightmare for you and your baby. Also its very soon after the birth, if you go over your dates then it will be even sooner after the birth. If you have a rough birth i.e. caesarean, or 3rd degree tear then its not going to be much of a holiday for you, also you have the added stress of caring for your baby in a foreign country, and believe me its hard enough with a first born when your in your own home, first few months its chaos! plus a newborn needs time to settle, its an awlful lot of upheavel for them, and again this will impact on you. Plus if they are poorly abroad you have to rely on health service in that country, and if they don't speak English then even more stressful! I, like you had a holiday booked prior to pregnancy, she would have been 11 weeks when we planned to go, no chance!! knowing whats involved in taking a baby so young abroad, I cancelled as it wouldnt have been a holiday, just an added stress/pressure on top of having a newborn. Ive rebooked ours and she'll be 9 months old, still going to be a bit of a nightmare but it'll be more of a holiday at least. Hope that helps Vicky x

Hi, We've just attempted a holiday with 14month old - re my post holiday h**l - it was a total nightmare not just because he wasn't well but the amount of 'stuff' you still need to go with you & you don't get a luggage allowance for small people. I have worked with babies / kids for 12years & believe you me nothing prepares you for the 1st few months with your own - as Vicky says life is thrown upside down for atleast 4months! If I was you I would wait until you have had the baby & then decide if you can face going away. I was back & forwards to docs & hosp for 1st 3months after I had my baby due to the problems I had. Life is complicated enough with out thinking about hols etc. I would change you holiday & go before you have baby - make the most of a relaxing time on your own!! x

Hi there, we holiday with friends each year and this year my friend had a new baby with her who was 6 weeks when we went to spain. We experienced no problems at all (my friend had also had a c-section!). All the baby wanted to do was feed and sleep! Much easier than the toddler we had with us!! Me personally would not cancel the holiday. If you are going to breast feed than you don't need to take milk etc (no sterilising) but if you are going to bottle feed then I would advise you to take a really big tupperware box (which I packed in my case), milton tablets, bottles and formula (which I took in our hand luggage). We did this when our little one was 5 months old. With regards to stuff to take if you are going to a hotter climate (lucky you!) then all the baby will need during the day is bodysuits and then sleepsuits in the evening. If you do decide to go, think how much time you will have to spend with your new baby, no housework, no cooking and no unexpected visitors! All a newborn baby wants to do is feed and sleep so you may even get chance to soak up the sun! One product I would definately recommend is a shade a babe for your pushchair which will protect you baby from all the harmful rays of the sun. Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and enjoy your holiday?! Karen mum of three girls 11, 7 and 23 months xx

Hi Thanks for info, will not cancel anything yet and wait and see, we are also going with our 4 year old and 21 others so assume this will make it easier for us. Also just worried about japs but assuming that as long as he/she has had them at 6 weeks it should be okay! Thanks again Sam
