16/11/2008

my son is 11 weeks old, he only stays awake for an hour after he wakes is this normal ? in the day i wake him every 4 hours for his feed and he then has half an hour play before he begins to cry and yawn ! So then he falls straight to sleep, should i try and make him stay awake for longer ? if so how?

Hiya Gemma, I wrote on here too about my daughter being quite sleepy. She is now 12 weeks old, and she has days where she is sleepy, but then she has days where she is awake for 4-5 hours at a time, and only has light naps. Its all part of their growing too, I have a little boy too, who is 5 now and he used to sleep lots until he got to the 3 month stage and he was far more interested in everything around him than sleeping! With my little girl, when she has her sleepy days, i just go with it, and like you, wake her 4 hourly for her feed. These days will become few and far between as she likes to be awake alot now!! So long as your child is feeding well, and seems well in himself then enjoy the peace while it lasts!! Maybe investing in some toys which make noise, or are brightly coloured might help. My daughter loves me hanging things from her pram, she smiles and kicks alot, which makes her alert. Take care! Laura and 12 week old Molly xx
