Hello, my partner and I have been talking about trying for another baby. My son is just coming up to 6 months old and is still being breastfeed and has just started to be weaned on to solids. I have heard that if you are breastfeeding it acts as a contraceptive and is 99% reliable. Does this mean I won't conceive until I finish breastfeeding???

Breastfeeding is not a very effective contraceptive. It works for some people, but I have a few friends who have children only a year apart because they got pregnant again while they were exclusively breastfeeding their first baby. The problem usually happens the other way round, when you get pregnant it can cause your milk supply to dry up, so you might end up needing to give your oldest formula until your second baby is born and your supply picks up again. Some people do manage to breastfeed right the way through pregnancy, but from what I have heard pregnancy usually makes breastfeeding more difficult. Sylv, Thomas 4 & Abigail 13 months

Hiya Apparently once you have started giving solids & breastfeeding a little less, your fertility picks up. I had a look on the net & you can take a few things to boost your mucus to aid fertilisation - Guaiphenesin found in Robitussin's Chesty Cough Medicine (safe whilst breasfeeding) is thought to do this. But make sure it has no other active ingredients as this will harm your milk flow. I am not a doctor or giving you any medical advice - just telling you what I have seen on the net. Amy & Joshie xxx

hey i breastfeed my 2yr old 4 a yr n didnt use ne contraception i didnt fal preg i havent bin breastfeeding 4 yr nw im nw 7munfs preg n my milk has neva stopped cumin thru! my mum hasnt been breastfeeding 4 14yrs n er milk is still cumin thru in 1 ov er boobs!! gud luk tryin x
