Still won't poo! help!
09/06/2008

Hi i posted on here when my daughter was 2 years and 3 months and she is now 3 and 2 months, and still won't poo! It has been going on for too long now. Its not as if she is constipated, its just that she doesn't want to poo! she will stand there with her legs crossed and stiff until the need to poo has gone, and she will hold it in for a week or so. She really doesn't want to i have tried laxatives like movicol and lactulose, she drinks plenty of fluids and loves her fruit, so she is not constipated. I am really worried that this could cause bigger problems for her in the future and because of this problem i can't potty train her properly, although she has had the odd wee on the toilet or the potty. I have tried to explain it to her how if she doesn't poo it will give her a sore tummy, and i encourage her saying i would love it if she did a poo and saying how her friends all have poos but she still refuses! has anyone had this problem with their little ones, and what was the outcome? anything else i should try? the doctor won't suggest anything he doesn't seem too bothered about it. thanks.

Hi you didn't mention whether you leave her to it or if you stand with her while she is on the potty. If you stand with her that might be the problem she might be a bit embarrassed try saying to her "I'll leave your potty here for you if you need to use it then it's there" and then just carry on with what you are doing so she doesn't feel forced to do it while you are there watching her. Hope this helps let me know how you get on. Love Karis xx

my little one is 20months and still in nappies and is exactly the same....he'll stand with his legs tight shut and the only way i can get him to poo is catch him at the right time lie him down and hold his legs akimbo till it comes...he too isn't constipated and has also been given lactulose but his poos seem huge, sorry to be gross! prob is he has a major dislike of fruit its really worrying...try to put a bit banana in his mouth and he gags..i've evn tried going back to the baby fruit purees but hes not daft.he doesn't have a hugely varied diet but i do the best i can....i just feel like i'm failing him cos when he does go he cries and cries.....like you my doc doesn't seem concerned but i'm his mum.....any advice would be great

Hi there my baby girl wouldnt poo and now she does one every day at least. I had advise from my mom and nan and what they told me to do is fill a bottle up glass or what ever you use and put about 5 tea spoons of sugar in this should loosen the bowels, and the poo might be a bit watery but its nothin to worry about. now i dont even have to use sugar water. it tastes nice aswell so ur child should drink all of there own made drink. health vistors recommend you not to give children sugar but they did reconmend this in the old days and it worked then and it still works now. when your child goes to the toilet/potty give plenty of praise unless your child responds better when you dont make a fuss. im 20 female and have a little cute happy girl.
