Cooled milk
15/05/2008

I have on occassion made a bottle of formula up but my son has not drank it straight away so it has cooled before he drinks it. Are there any issues with giving him formula that is not warm or should it always be warm before given to him? he's 5 weeks old

Hi, my son is 10 weeks old and is always drinking milk at room temperature. I never let him have it if its been out of the fridge for more than 2 hours but he has never had a problem with cool milk. As long as its not straight out of the fridge as it could give him a stomach chill. Hope all goes well. Hayley and 10 week old Deacon

My hv told me to throw any unused milk away after 1 hour of warming it up, and you should never reheat the milk

Hi if you have made the bottle then left it on side and its gone cool you can heat in microwave for about 30 secs (without teat) make sure you shake it well and test on your wrist before you give it the baby or put it in a jug of boiling water if you dont like to use the microwave - you can keep bottles for 24 hrs but if baby has started drinking from it chuck away after a hour. i have done this with my 3 children and will do for the next. My 1 yr old will drink room temperture bottle in morning but likes it warm before bed. Clair & 12,9 & 1 & 28 wk bump

i used to warm my sons milk up at first but as after an hour if baby not drunk all the milk it has to be thrown i started to give it him at room temp which was never a problem he drank it and if not straight away i could still give him after more than an hour had passed!but i must admit he was a good feeder so never really had to!just made bottles up with boiling water and left on side then added powder when ready to feed him..they say if stored in fridge can last up to 24hrs and i think same not in the fridge has its just the water not the formula milk.

My 11 week ol dwill only drink his milk if it is a room temp. I have been told that you can keep milk for 24 hours if it has not been used. I make a few bottles up at a time as if you do it when your baby wants it you have to wait over 1/2 hour for the kettle to cool down by which time they are screaming for milk. Having milk at room temp will not harm them at all. Just make sure that if its a hot day to keep them somewhere cool.

Hi i was told by my Hv that it is fine to give milk at room temperature, but you may find that it gives your baby more wind. Carley,Jessica 2,Jack 3 months
