Still won't poo on toilet at 3 1/2
11/08/2008

If anyone out there has any advice or been in a similar situation I would be grateful for any replies as I am at my wit's end. My little boy is almost 3 1/2, he's been toilet trained with wees for 7 months now as well as being dry throughout the night. However he still does not poo on the toilet, the odd time he has has been by sheer luck. The odd time he has done it he's received lots of praise, stickers etc, as this worked with cracking wees. I have spoken to the Health Visitor about it, who hasn't been a great deal of help to be honest, I've tried to keep my cool with him and just keep repeating "next time tell mammy when you want a poo" and he says he will, he just never does!!!! The other problem being he doesn't have a set bowel movement, some days its as soon as he gets up, other times it can be as late as teatime, so siting him on the toilet at set times hasn't worked (believe me I've tried). He's never made himself constipated over this, or asked for a nappy back on, he just isn't making any progress - it just doesn't seem to bother him. I would just like to know if this is remotely normal as all my other friends who have kids of a similar age have long since cracked toilet training. He goes to nursery, the staff there are really chilled out about it and tell me not to worry and he'll do it in his own time, this is about the only thing that's kept me sane. Am beginning to think he's got something wrong with him and am considering taking him to the docs. Sorry if this sounds like a bit of a rant but I don't know else to do other than bang my head off the wall! S & S

Hello I am having the same problem with my son and my best friend also had the same problem its a seperation anxiety they feel like they are losing a part of themselves. Ask you health visitor for the booklet "Poo goes to pooland" its a story for children to help them deal with it. Another thing you could try which a friend used was when you know he needs one out him on the toilet and hold some tissue to his bum so it makes it feel like a nappy is on sounds gross but she did this for a while til her little one got used to sitting on for poo's and gradually she took the tissue away. Hope all this helps you x x

Hi, my son is exactly the same. He was 3 at the end of April and we've had him dry for a few months now but he will not poo on potty/toilet. If he does it's pure luck. My husband has been getting really stressed saying it's got to be sorted but when I talk to other people it seems to be quite common for children to be like this. I'm just trying not to worry too much and hopefully he'll be fine! I'm going to contact my health visitor and see if I can get a copy of leaflet the other lady mentioned. Good luck and i'm sure your little boy will be fine.
